Texas, San Antonio - Tuesday, October 15, 2013 - Riverwalk

Where we are staying is just right outside of San Antonio, so this morning we took off to see several of the downtown tourist attractions.  I had been to San Antonio during a convention several years ago, but seeing them again made for a very nice day.  Although all of the walking did make us a couple of couch potatoes this evening.
We started out with the Riverwalk.  We skipped the barge tour and decided to walk it.

Lots of work has gone into this area.  I understand that it was originally designed for flood control but it is a center of shopping, hotels and restaurants now.  Although signs warn not to feed the ducks, there are a lot of them on the river just waiting for someone to break that rule.

This bald cypress tree was huge, the picture doesn’t do it justice.

Seems there is a legend that goes along with it.

We stopped for lunch at Joe’s Crab Shack – I know they have them in Indiana also so that wasn’t very imaginative.  We’ve always had good food there and once again today it was delicious.

After lunch we found our way to the Alamo.  I’m always amazed at how small it seems.  I think it is so great that this shrine has been preserved right in the heart of downtown San Antonio.  Pictures aren’t allowed inside so those memories are just in our minds.

After the Alamo we decided to go over to the Tower of the Americas.  This structure is 750 feet tall and was built in 1968.  Right now I can’t remember what celebration it was built for and I’m getting a bit tired, so that info may have to wait until another day.  There is an observation tower on the top floor, but we had already seen quite a bit of San Antonio so we decided we didn’t feel like paying the $10 fee to see it from the air.

The grounds around the tower have some very nice landscaping features, but there is so much construction going on around it that takes away some of the beauty of it.

We could see the Alamodome across the way, but didn’t try to find our way there.

The modern Alamodome construction contrasts greatly with the beautiful old architecture in some of the downtown hotels.
