Texas, San Antonio - Thursday, October 17, 2013 - River Walk

The River Walk project was just completed earlier this month.  It is a 10-mile stretch of walkways and picnic areas that run from the mission area outside of town into downtown San Antonio.  The RV Park where we are staying is at the 5-mile mark and a trailhead is located just across the entrance driveway of the park.

The sidewalks are plenty wide for strollers (like us), runners and bikers to use at the same time without running into each other.

About 3 feet of grass on each side of the walk is mowed and from there it is left in its natural state which is really quite pretty.

The river attracts lots of birds.  I’m going to have to get more informed on what kind of birds they are, right now I just appreciate the beauty.

This afternoon lots of turtles were out sunning on the rocks.

Picnic tables are provided all along the trail in shelters

Or, closer to the river

There are plenty of trash and recycling containers along with fresh drinking water for humans and pets alike.  The informational signs say there are public restrooms, but we didn’t see any in the part that we walked.

We saw lots of people out taking advantage of this beautiful day.  According to the local weather report they are having February weather here – 50’s at night, low 70’s during the day.  Obviously too “cold” to be taking advantage of the pool, so I got a good picture today as we walked back home.

Those of you who know us know that we didn’t walk the entire 10 miles so I don’t know whether or not all of the project looks like the area here, but right where we need it, it’s beautiful.
We’ll be leaving here Tuesday the 22nd and heading just east of Houston for a week.  After that we are looking at the Baton Rouge, Louisiana area for a while before we go to Gulf Shores, Alabama on our way to Florida for the winter.
