South Carolina, Hollywood - Sunday, August 10, 2014 - Lake Aire RV Park

The last couple of days we were at Hardeeville RV Park there was some tree clearing going on across the way from our site.  When the view opened up we could see this charming little tiny house.  If we had stayed longer I think I would have worked up the nerve to walk across the field to see if I could find out more about it.

A lot of our drive to our new location was through marsh land.  I think this area of South Carolina is called “The Low Country”.

We’ve noticed a beautiful absence of billboards along the Georgia and South Carolina highways.  One thing we did notice here along I-17 though are the utility wires hanging from poles rather than being underground.  We think that the water table here must be too high to encourage them being underground.

One other thing we notice an absence of is litter.  However, there are signs posted that say fines can be up to $1,000 or up to $1,200 for littering.  I’m thinking it isn’t nearly that high back in Indiana, but I don’t really remember.  Whatever it is they are doing it is working.  I noticed another sign that said “$200 fine and 30 days in jail” for speeding.  That still doesn’t seem to deter a lot of people.  As we are usually moving about 5 mph under the speed limit it’s not a worry for us, but that 30 days in jail possibility would certainly make me think twice about whether or not I was in a hurry.

Since we had seen all we had planned in the Savannah area and it was triple digit hot we made the decision to move closer to Charleston and try to get in a little sightseeing there before we made our way on up to the Washington D.C. area.
We’ve been here two days and what we have seen is RAIN and more RAIN.  Downtown Charleston was experiencing flooding yesterday.  The Charleston Airport is reporting 3.8” of rain, the record was just over 2 inches.  Right now we couldn’t leave here if we wanted to.  The stone drives in the campground have received so much rain that we would get stuck if we tried to move.  We haven’t unloaded the motorcycle which is a good thing.  More rain is expected tomorrow and there is a chance of rain every day for the next week.

We are going to need some serious drying days in order for us to be able to move so a few of those triple digit hot days we just escaped would be good.  Fortunately, we have everything we need and we are perfectly safe.  So we are prepared to wait it out a few days and then move on.  I think our plans to visit Charleston may have to wait until next year when we will be back in this area again.  Hopefully, it is more hospitable the next time.
