We headed
out this morning on the last leg of our journey to Rapid City, SD. Indiana is still at the top of my “worst
roads” list, but SD state road 44W is right up there close. We started off with construction, at least
they put the cones off to the side of the road.
Then the
pavement ended. It’s not like you can
turn around or go a mile or so and take a detour. Out here you have to go on. This was hard packed very bumpy gravel.
Then we had
18 miles of that concrete that makes us go thunk—thunk—thunk. But, that was better than this. I’m not sure the incline shows up like it
should in this picture. I could just see
us getting buried to the axels.
Fortunately, we made it through and we didn’t even get very muddy.
This road
looks like a patchwork quilt, it is hard to tell from this picture but there
are four different road surfaces showing and none of them are smooth.
Enough of my
rant on the road conditions. The scenery
around us was beautiful. 44W runs
through part of the Badlands National Park.
We got set
up at Rapid City RV Park where we will be until July 10 exploring the
surrounding area. We got out today to
find the local WalMart to stock up on a few things and to buy a new sewer
hose. That’s going to be the extent of
our travels for today.
