We weren’t
too far into the Flathead Indian Reservation when we spotted this
overpass. We didn’t see any animals on
the roadway so maybe they do know they are supposed to cross here.
Flathead Lake
area is known for its Flathead Cherries and the cherries just now came into
season. There is a cherry stand about
every half mile. We bought some of the
Flathead cherries at a Fresh Market grocery in Missoula so we didn’t have to
try to get our motor coach into a roadside stand. They are very good cherries but we buy
cherries quite a bit and I can’t really taste that much of a difference. Don’t get me wrong we are going to buy more
of them.
If you are
traveling around the east side of the lake, trees obscure your view for a good
bit.
Then the
lake starts to come into view. Flathead
Lake is the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River. It is 30 miles long and 15 miles wide at the
widest point. It covers nearly 200
square miles of Montana and is 300 feet deep.
We saw very
few boats on the lake. In fact, most of
the lakes out here don’t have many boats on them.
And, I think
this is the only large lake we have seen that has homes around at least part of
it. Nothing at all like Indiana lakes.
There is
very little opportunity for passing on the road around Flathead Lake. These signs are posted all along the way.
The West
Glacier KOA is one beautiful campground.
We are paying twice what we normally do for a campground, but it was the
only option available since this was kind of a last minute decision to come up
here. These cabins are across from us,
they look really nice.
The ice
cream shop is open from 5-10 p.m. Wouldn’t
you just love to grow container plants like these?
Heading back
home after my photo walk. This is the
view looking from the office back toward the adult pool.
