I noticed
this rock and tree a few days ago but was unsuccessful at that time getting a
good picture. I think this is a real
show of persistence on the part of the tree, you know that rock is really
heavy. But, it may be that the rock was
there first precariously hanging on to the cliff when the tree started to grow
underneath it. Since it couldn’t grow
up, it had to grow around. I’m sure we
will never know the true story, so it’s just one more wonder of nature that we
have seen on our travels.
Not too far
into Montana we came across this abandoned mine. The historical marker at the side of the road
was titled “Smith Mine Disaster”. In 1943, 74 men were killed. A build up of methane gas was blamed, but the cause of detonation is unknown. However, it was noted that the men were allowed to smoke in the mine.
Red Lodge,
MT looks like an interesting town to visit when it’s not overrun with
bikers. Don’t get me wrong, we like
bikers since that is what we used to be.
But, this town was really crowded!
This weekend they are having a biker rally and from what we could see it
was a success.
Montana has
lots of green grass and cows.
On I-90 west
today we get into some curvy roads and a few lesser mountains. Tomorrow we will go over the Rockies to reach
our destination of Missoula, MT.
We are
overnight at Osen’s RV Park, a well-kept little park.
