South Dakota, Sioux Falls - Wednesday, August 7, 2013 -Sioux Empire Fair

This morning I finished some of the cleaning/labeling projects I started yesterday.  After lunch we headed to the Sioux Empire Fair.  From the literature we read on it, it sounded like the county 4-H Fair back in Indiana.  The admission fee was supposed to be $7 a person, so I had money in my pocket so I could pay for us (it’s hard for Greg to get money out of his billfold and hold on to the bike at the same time).  We didn’t see anyone taking money until we came out.  Not sure if it was free this morning, but it was for us.
There were a lot of nice big buildings on the fairgrounds.

The announcer said it was Ag Day and mentioned to visit the livestock barns.  We found about 10 cows, a couple of dozen pigs and four or five sheep – that was it.
Going through the exhibit building we did note that they had a competition I don’t recall seeing at the Madison County Fair

There looked like a lot of rides for the kids, we didn’t go through that area.  Something there was a lot of – food booths.  One place was advertising “Chislic and Kutchen – South Dakota Specialties”.  I went up and asked what it was.  Chislic is cubes of lamb on a stick that is flash fried in oil until it is crisp outside and soft inside.  They told me it was an acquired taste.  Kutchen like they make it is some kind of formed pudding with fruit topping, supposed to be the state dessert of South Dakota.  We passed on both of them!  There wasn’t a fried pork tenderloin to be found – they don’t know what they are missing.

They have a nice grandstands, I think the Charlie Daniels Band is performing tonight, admission to the concert is free with that $7 fair admission you are supposed to pay.
