We are in
Gaffney, South Carolina at the Freightliner Custom Chassis location to get a
couple of things checked out by the experts on our motor coach chassis. They have 20 sites where customers can hook
up to electricity while they wait for service.
It is on a first come, first serve basis so we made sure we got here
early Sunday to secure a spot. We are on
the “wait for a spot to come available” list for service. We called a couple of months ago to make an
appointment for service and found out they were booking into late November at
that point. We have to be back in Mesa
by November 1 so we just opted to show up and wait. Right now they are booking into next year, so
if you feel a need to have anything on your Freightliner chassis checked out,
plan ahead.
The drive to
here from Washington, D.C. was a scenic one.
We stopped for one night at Concord, NC at the Charlotte Motor Speedway
campground. The campground there was
starting to fill up with NASCAR fans for this coming weekend’s race.
In my
opinion North Carolina still has the best roadside landscaping of any state we
have been through so far. This photo is
of a wispy grass that has a purple head that sways beautifully in the
wind. Other areas were full of
wildflowers and some were large masses of sunflowers.
We were
searching for the road our GPS told us to turn on and I almost missed this shot
of Gaffney’s water tower. It’s a very
well maintained, very large peach!
Gaffney is the peach capital of South Carolina.
We stopped
to chat with some very informative Freightliner representatives when we were at
the Hershey RV show. One of them
informed us that “water and electric were available and a sewer dump was also
on site”. Just to clarify, electric
20-30-50 amp service is available at your site.
Water is available at the island way up there surrounded by those yellow
posts. That’s just fine if you know that
ahead of time and fill up as you are coming in.
We didn’t know that until after we had already backed into our spot and
chose not to go back up to fill up the water holding tank. We always carry some water with us – so we
are good for a while.
This
facility is about 5 miles from the Freightliner factory which offers tours every
day at 10:30. Once we find out when we
can get in for service we might leave and take a tour. I was expecting a larger building, but they
seem to be moving coaches in and out pretty quickly. We think we might get in this afternoon. We would have probably been able to get in
yesterday but we are too long. They pull
coaches in nose to nose so they can fit six of them in. We are too long to fit in nose to nose with
another coach so we have to wait until the rotation opens up two bays to accommodate
us.
We made use
of these comfy rockers. There is also a
nice customer lounge inside but I didn’t figure the people waiting in there
would appreciate me coming in taking pictures.
This is the
view across the parking lot from the rockers.
You can see that the leaves on the small trees are just starting to
turn.
