Utah, Moab - Saturday, May 7, 2016 - Spanish Trail RV Park

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY TO MY MOM and OUR DAUGHTERS AND DAUGHTERS-IN-LAW.

We have a lot of great moms in our family.  Hope they all have a special day – we will be thinking about them.  I may not be making a post to the blog tomorrow so our wishes are coming a day early.

We are in site 514 at Spanish Trail RV Park just south of Moab, Utah, we’ll be leaving here Tuesday morning.  We’ll make a couple of overnight stops in Colorado and then on to Kansas to visit David and the grandkids for a while.

Spanish Trail RV Park is a well maintained Good Sam Park on Hwy. 191 about 10 miles from Arches National Park.  I think all of the sites are pull through, some of them look like they run uphill.  Our site is a 60’ pull through and is fairly level.  All of the sites are nicely graveled and have a picnic table.  The rate is $52 per day.  You get a 10% discount with your Good Sam card but that discount is negated by a 10.45% hotel tax.  Since the weather appears to be kind of iffy for the weekend we asked to stay an extra day to make sure we can get to Arches.  The “Ride the Rocks” all-terrain vehicle competition is happening all next week so Monday cost $62 (daily rate for special events).  We saw a lot of RV parks as we drove through town but most of them have a “no vacancy” sign posted.  Looks like lots of people are in town to ride the rocks.

Our trip started out rainy this morning.  Thunderstorms woke us up about 4:00.  It’s been a long time since we heard thunder.

It looks like there is more on the way.

The scenery on I-70 from Richfield to Hwy. 191 is pretty spectacular.

These smooth mountains have lots of boulders laying on them that look like they fell from somewhere – but where?

More scenery, the road was very curvy and there were a lot of 6% downgrades.  I’m just glad it wasn’t icy.  I get uncomfortable when “runaway truck ramps” are every mile or so.  I think this area is called Gray Canyon.  It’s a little hard to tell from our atlas, the spiral binding runs right through this area of my map.

  1. We love that area. You cannot leave until you see Arches. Canyonlands is amazing, as well. Dead Horse Point State Park (near Canyonlands) is just as spectacular. If you have time, drive along Potash Road (on the left as you drive out of Moab. There are some amazing petroglyphs on the cliffs next to the river that you can just pull over to see. You may need to stay more than one extra day :-)..Have fun.
