For Mother’s
Day we took a ride into Moab to look around.
My Mother’s Day treat was a wonderful chocolate brownie ice cream
cone. The Spoke on Center has a sidewalk
window for ice cream orders – see the lady in the window on the corner.
Peace Tree
is another interesting looking restaurant on Main Street.
There was a
row of gorgeous roses lining the sidewalk to Peace Tree.
I’m
surprised this picture turned out, all of these whirligigs were spinning in the
wind.
The roads in
Moab are really, really wide. However, I
thought this might just be a bit much.
We just waited until the traffic cleared like we learned in Indiana. We did see some people waving the little
orange flags over their heads.
The visitor
center at the Arches National Park was pretty plain.
But the view
from inside was beautiful.
I was
skeptical that the pictures I took from the back of the motorcycle would turn
out well. The road was pretty bumpy but
most of them turned out pretty good.
I don’t know
what this thing sitting precariously on top of this narrow cliff is called, but
it looks like it could come down at any time.
Flowers were
in bloom all over the park.
Looking down
on where we started.
The
formation in the middle of the picture is called the “Organ”. The “Three Gossips” is to the left and is
pretty easy to pick out.
This is us
with the “Three Gossips” in the background.
More views
of the “Organ”, look at how thin it really is.
More scenery
shots.
Although
there is some spectacular scenery there is also a lot of relatively flat land
along the 18 mile drive through the park.
The Balanced
Rock is one of the best know features of the park. Pictures just don’t do it justice. The formation is 128 feet high. The boulder is balanced on a softer pedestal
of mudstone (note the color difference).
The mudstone is a faster eroding substance so at some point the Balanced
Rock will collapse.
The short
trail up to the Balanced Rock is wide and paved.
This is our
wildlife picture of the day. He was
sunning himself on the side of the trail.
Several of
these twisted bushes (I think they are cedar) were in the area of the Balanced
Rock. I wonder if the strong winds
twisted them?
More scenery
shots.
Does this
mean there is a problem?
These arches
are known as the “Windows”.
These are
the “Double Arches”.
This
formation is probably the most popular in the park – the Delicate Arch.
The La Sal
Mountains are the ones we can see from the RV park. They reach 12,000 feet elevation and there is
a lot of snow up there.
Tomorrow
morning we will be moving to Breckenridge, CO.
It’s supposed to be colder there – bummer.
