On Friday we
left Las Cruces headed for Ft. Stockton, TX.
Luckily, the wind died down over night and we had a rather pleasant, but
long and boring drive to Ft. Stockton.
After
getting through El Paso, which seemed to go on forever, there wasn’t much to
see.
We had to
make a stop at a checkpoint to be inspected by border patrol. We just rolled through while the heat
detecting cameras and the drug sniffing dog didn’t find anything.
On Friday
night we watched the Clint Eastwood movie, The Mule. This is a good one. It’s based on a true story of an 80 year old
man who became a drug runner for the Cartel.
The movie ended with a song called “Don’t Let the Old Man In” by Toby
Keith. Keith was inspired to write the
song after a conversation he had with 88 year old Eastwood. He asked Eastwood who was getting ready to
produce and star in the movie how he kept so active. Eastwood’s reply was that he “got up and
didn’t let the old man in”. I love that
thought, from now on we are going to get up and “not let the old folks in”.
Today we had
breakfast at the Roadrunner Café here on site at the Ft. Stockton RV Park. I did a little housekeeping and a load of
laundry and then we headed into town.
We stopped
at the Visitors Center and found out that everything was shut down for the
Easter weekend. We still walked around a
bit. The center is a former railroad
depot that was built in 1911 and rehabbed in 1991.
Lots of
metal sculptures around the center depicting wagons, pioneers and cowboys.
Fort
Stockton was founded in 1859 and was abandoned during the Civil War. It was reestablished in 1867 and operated
until 1886. This guard house is one of
four original buildings on site.
Unfortunately, the property was also shut down for the weekend.
We did get a
good look at the “second largest roadrunner” on our way out of town. Roadrunners are a big thing around here. I think we saw the largest one near Las
Cruces.
